Hello Music
Lover!
A few days after the Boston Marathon bombings, I performed for the grand opening of a grocery
store. Not the most glamorous gig, to be sure. But the job paid well, the food was good, and I was happy for the work.
At the time, I was questioning - What difference can playing music possibly make in the face of terrorist bombings, school
shootings, global weather disasters, devastating oil spills, greed-induced economic collapse, disappointing legislative
policies, cancer-causing modified foods? Are the precious moments of my life being used in a way that has any positive
impact? Does playing saxophone matter at all?
Suddenly, two grocery store employees burst out dancing with abandon next to the potato chip display. They danced with such
joy that tears welled up in my eyes. At that moment, I understood quite viscerally how important music is to raise our
spirits, energize us, and connect us with our humanity. When we are dancing, we are doing no harm.
To watch us dance is to hear our hearts speak.
-~ Indian proverb
Looking forward to playing saxophone for you and seeing you smile.
Cheers!
