Hi friend,
You showed up for us and filled
the room with your enthusiastic support
during our March shows at La Costanera.
Thanks to you, my "Latini" duo with
guitarist Ricardo Peixoto is now set to
perform our Brazilian bossa novas and Latin
jazz on two Fridays a month! We hope that
you will continue to enjoy our live music
as much as we enjoy playing for you at this
new venue.
The icing on the cake is that
Ricardo will also be performing at Moss
Beach Distillery with me on the last
Wednesday of this month. April is gonna be
fun!

What is so special about bossa
novas, you may ask? Well, bossa nova is a
beautiful genre of music that just makes
life feel good, according to the narrator
of this short history of bossa nova. And
I tend to agree! Learn how bossa nova was
created and how it came to be popular all
over the world in this short
4-minute video.

VIDEO: Bossa Nova - A Short
History, 4:37 minutes
|
To summarize, bossa nova started
on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in the
late 1950s. The principal figures in its
creation were João Gilberto,
Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Vinìcius
de Moraes. Bossa nova borrows the rich
harmony from jazz but the feel is swaying
instead of swinging. The rhythm for bossa
nova was based on the samba but with a
softer sound and slower tempo. The
singing is very relaxed and laid-back,
and the lyrics tend to revolve around
women, nature and love.
What was the album that made bossa
nova famous worldwide? It was the 1963
album Getz/Gilberto featuring Antonio
Carlos Jobim. This album with saxophonist
Stan Getz took bossa around the world. The
hit song, The Girl From Ipanema, is the
second most recorded song in history after
Yesterday by the Beatles! Listen to the
full album here.
