Hot Sax and IQ

Hello Music Lover!

Did you know that musicians are probably smarter than most other people? I'm not just sayin' that. A recent study found that musicians' brains tend to function better than their peers well into old age. Not only that, musicians had higher IQ scores overall than people who just listened to music rather than learning to play an instrument. Plus, the number of years a person devoted to performing music corresponded to how strong their brains were years later.

"Engaging in musical activity for most of one's lifetime significantly helps at remembering names, and enhances nonverbal memory and mental agility during old age. Musical training also seems to enhance verbal prowess and the general IQ of a person, although it is possible that people with higher IQ tend to pursue music more seriously."
--Kevin Matthews, FYI Living (based on research by Brenda Hanna-Pladdy and Alicia MacKay at the University of Kansas Medical Center)

Bet you wish you had stayed a band geek instead of becoming a jock back in high school! No worries. It's never too late to Rock 'n' Roll!  Start by coming out to hear some smarty pants musicians play for you. Then choose the instrument that inspires you, find a good teacher, and dig in.
